1 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the USA
сокр VFWСтарейшая общенациональная ветеранская организация. Основана в 1899 как Организация ветеранов испано-американской войны [United Spanish War Veterans, Spanish-American War]; в 1913 в нее влились еще две ветеранские организации, и она приобрела современное название; в 1936 получила хартию Конгресса [ Congress, U.S.]. The elections of February 1936 were won by a coalition of socialist and anarchist groups known as the Frente Popular or FP, and were followed by a period of social disorder. On July 18 of that year, General Francisco Franco led a military coup. In the ensuing war Franco's side was known as the Nacionales and the government forces as the Republicanos. Neither army was well-equipped, so foreign support was a decisive factor: the USSR sent aid to the Republicans and volunteers from all over Europe formed Brigadas Internacionales (International Brigades) to fight for the Republican side.
